Rosalie Mann, the president of No More Plastic Foundation, has been outspoken about the dangers of plastic recycling. In her recent work, she challenges the commonly accepted belief that recycling is an effective solution to plastic pollution. Mann argues that plastic recycling exacerbates environmental and health issues, as the process often releases more harmful chemicals than it removes. Recycled plastic, according to Mann, contains more toxic substances, including volatile organic compounds and microplastics, which are harmful to human health. These pollutants can enter the body, affecting various systems and potentially causing diseases like cancer and cardiovascular issues.

Moreover, Mann highlights that plastic pollution starts long before products become waste. From production to everyday use, plastics continuously release microplastics into the environment, which are then ingested by humans and animals. For example, common items like shoes and tires contribute to microplastic pollution through wear and tear. This widespread contamination, she claims, is not only an environmental crisis but a public health threat, especially for women who are more vulnerable due to their biology, which makes them absorb toxins more easily.

Her call is for a reduction in plastic production and a reevaluation of recycling practices, suggesting that new policies and innovations, such as enzyme-based plastic destruction, need to be prioritized over the false hope of recycling
